Bay Area: Coordinated Demonstrations Draw Attention to Big Oil’s Role in California Wildfires
RICHMOND, Calif. – Union members, residents who lost their homes in recent Los Angeles wildfires and environmental leaders will hold rallies and demonstrations on Tuesday, March 11 in front of a major refinery in Richmond, drawing attention to the role of greenhouse gas emissions in California’s destructive wildfires and climate destruction.
Demonstrators, who include residents who lost their homes in the Camp and Tubbs fires, will rally in front of the Chevron Richmond Refinery and will create a large-scale mural using ash collected from the burn site in Altadena after the recent Eaton Canyon fire. The mural will say invest in communities not fossil fuels.
Oil refining is Richmond’s biggest polluter, poisoning the air and endangering public health for years. Emissions from the Chevron Refinery cause an estimated 5–11 premature deaths yearly and contribute to heart disease, respiratory illness, and asthma, per the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
